John 20:19-23
John 20:19-23
Speaker: Karen Bird
Date: April 12, 2026
1. Why is it significant that Jesus appeared to the disciples on “the first day of the week”? How does this connect to both creation and new creation…and Sunday morning church?!
2. The disciples were gathered behind locked doors out of fear. What kinds of fears might they have been experiencing, and how can you relate to them in your own life?
3. What stands out to you about the fact that Jesus chose to appear in a small, fearful gathering rather than in a more public or powerful setting?
4. Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace be with you” instead of rebuke. What does this reveal about his character and how he deals with failure?
5. Why do you think Jesus showed the disciples his wounds? What is the significance of his scars in understanding his identity and mission?
6. The sermon explains that death is the natural outcome of humanity’s rebellion from the Source of Life. How does this shape your understanding of sin, death, and salvation?
7. What does “peace” (shalom) mean in this passage beyond just the absence of conflict? How have you experienced—or struggled to experience—this kind of peace?
8. Jesus says, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” What does it mean to be sent in the same way Jesus was sent?
9. How does the Holy Spirit empower the disciples for their mission? What is significant about Jesus breathing on them?
10. Read 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 together. How do you feel about being thrust into God’s mission as part of the sent collective? What does this look like in your life as part of the Church? Pray for one another and for the church as a whole as we continue the mission of reconciliation that God has begun in Christ.
