Note for leaders: This is a long text — too long to read together in one sitting and still have room for discussion. Split into three groups and have each group take one section.

Part 1 — In your groups

Read your section together:

  • Group 1: Acts 27:1–26
  • Group 2: Acts 27:27–44
  • Group 3: Acts 28:1–16

Then work together to prepare:

  1. A brief summary of what happens in your section.
  2. The main theme of your section.
  3. Any significant verses in your section.

Part 2 — Whole group

  1. Have each group report back on the three questions above.
  2. Now that you've heard all three sections, what themes are common across them?
  3. Luke gives an enormous amount of space and detail to this voyage. Why do you think that is? What does all this detail accomplish?

Part 3 — Paul's story and Acts' story

Together, summarize Paul's story across the book of Acts. Why does coming to Rome to stand trial before Caesar feel like a fitting climax to Paul's story? Why does it feel like a fitting climax to the book of Acts?

Part 4 — Read Acts 28:17–31

  1. What do you notice about how the book ends? Is anything surprising about it?
  2. How does this ending show that the church's mission cannot be stopped?
  3. The book ends with Paul bearing witness in the midst of belief and unbelief, rather than with a showdown before Caesar. Why do you think Luke ends it this way? What does that tell us about what actually matters in this story?
  4. How does this ending invite us to continue the story?

Part 5 — Continuing the story

This text invites us to continue the story of bearing witness to Jesus' kingdom and lordship.

  • What does it look like for us to do this faithfully?
  • What would it look like for you to trust that God can use you to bear witness to him?
  • How can we pray for this as a church? How do you need prayer for this?
