Read John 5:45-46. These two verses set up John 6 by bringing Moses to our minds, the great prophet of Israel.
1. As a group, discuss some of the major events Moses was involved in.
2. Read Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Isaiah 43:16-19. How would these promises of a prophet like Moses and a salvation like the Exodus have affected the people of Jesus' day who were living under the oppressive hand of the Roman Empire?
Read John 6:1-6
1. How do these verses connect Jesus to those promises? How is John pushing us to see Jesus' identity?
2. What is the true "crisis" of this passage? Is it the food, or something else?
3. If the real crisis is about knowing Jesus' identity and trusting in him, how does that reframe the way you deal with crises in your own life?
4. What would it mean to trust Jesus as the one who can overthrow the powers of our world and provide for us in the wilderness?
Read John 6:7-13; 16-21
1. What do these verses show us about Jesus?
2. Why is it significant that he provides all the people wanted and more? How does this connect to Psalm 23?
3. Jesus' words in 6:20 could be translated "I Am; don't be afraid." Why is this significant?
Read John 6:14-15
1. The people seemed to partly understand who Jesus is, but also still missed it. In what ways did they misunderstand?
2. In what ways do you try to force Jesus to save you the way you want to be saved?
3. How did Jesus truly save us? How did Jesus overthrow the powers of our world? Read John 12:31-33 for help.
4. Do you feel overwhelmed? Do you feel like the world is out of control, or your life is out of control? Do you feel like you are in the wilderness or in the raging sea? How does this text speak to you? How can we encourage you to trust Jesus
