Opening

Summarize what we have been talking about for the last few weeks. What are some of the themes that have emerged?

The Call Given to the Elders

  1. Read Acts 20:13–16, 22–25. According to these verses, why is Paul taking time to encourage and commission the elders of Ephesus? Comparing this to the themes we have seen over the last number of weeks, why would calling on the Church leaders to take their role seriously be so important during this time?
  2. Why do you think it is important for all of us to consider the nature of the call given to elders by God? Why does the whole Church need to be aware of this?

The Character of the Leader

  1. Read Acts 20:17–21, 32–35. Here Paul highlights his own conduct among the Ephesians. He frequently had to defend his character against opponents who charged that he was not impressive, dynamic, or strong enough as a leader and teacher. Notice that Paul does not answer them by claiming he was more impressive than they thought. Instead, he points to his humility, his labour, and his suffering as the very marks of his ministry. What vision of leadership is Paul offering here, and how is it different from the one his critics assumed? How does this relate to Jesus' definition of leadership for the Church in Mark 10:42–45?
  2. How does this speak to the character of the leaders we should seek to have in our Church? Have you thought about what you want your pastors and elders to be like? How would Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 12:7–11; 13:1–3 speak to how we should approach giftedness and character?

The Weight of the Ministry

  1. Read Acts 20:26–32. How do these words display the weight of ministry given to elders and pastors? Why is it important for you to see that this is the call given by God himself?

Our Response

  1. Verse 30 warns that distortion will come from among your own selves. What is the congregation's own responsibility in helping guard the truth we hold together?
  2. What would it take for you to allow the Church leadership to care for you in this way?
  3. How can you pray for and encourage your pastors and elders in this?
