God’s Judgment and the State of the World


Isaiah’s Message of Judgment:


  • Look over Isaiah 13–23, and read Isaiah 24:1–3. What is the overall message of these verses? Summarize what they are saying.
  • How does Isaiah 24:4–6 explain the reason for God’s actions in these passages?


Sin and Its Consequences:


  • How do you normally think about sin?
  • According to Isaiah 24:4–6, how does sin affect our relationship with God and the state of the world?
  • How does Isaiah 24:4–6 describe humanity’s sin against God and its connection to the brokenness of creation?


The Everlasting Covenant and Our Hope


Understanding the Everlasting Covenant:


  • Read Genesis 8:20–9:17. This passage is the "Everlasting covenant" that is being referred to in Isaiah 24:5. What promises does God make to humanity in this covenant?
  • What responsibilities or commitments are humanity called to uphold in this covenant?


Breaking the Covenant:


  • How does Isaiah 24:4–6 demonstrate that humanity has broken the everlasting covenant?
  • Despite this, how does referencing the everlasting covenant offer hope for restoration?


Judgment, Love, and Restoration


Judgment as an Act of Love:


  • How is God’s judgment connected to his love for creation?
  • Why is judgment an essential part of God’s commitment to restoring the world?


The Results of Restoration:


  • Read Isaiah 35:1–7. What will the world look like after God’s judgment and the return of Jesus?
  • Read Isaiah 35:8–10. Who will be part of this restored world?
  • How does this vision of restoration connect to the message of Christmas and Jesus’ first coming?
