1. Context and Major Themes from Romans 1-7

  • How would you summarize the main message Paul conveys about the Gospel in Romans 1-7?

2. Understanding Romans 8:1-2

  • What do you normally think Romans 8:1 means about our salvation and standing before God?
  • How does the grammatical connection between verse 1 and verse 2 (the word “because”) change or clarify that understanding?

3. Romans 7:7-25, 8:1-4 and the Law

  • What general message do you think Paul is communicating about the purpose of the Law in Romans 7?
  • What is positive about the Law, according to Paul?
  • In what ways does the Law reveal our sinfulness but fail to produce lasting change or “life”?
  • How does this clarify what Paul means by “the law of sin and death?” How does it show that commandments by themselves are not enough? How does Romans 8:3-4 refer to this?
  • In what ways did God’s solution—sending Jesus—address what the Law could not do?
  • What is Paul saying the gift of the Spirit enables us to do?
  • How is this text not only talking about forgiveness, but living as God would have us? How is it encouraging us to see that we can truly live this way?

4. Living “In Christ” and Empowered by the Spirit

  • How does Jesus’ example model the kind of community we are called to embody?
  • In what ways does the Holy Spirit empower us to reflect Jesus’ love, forgiveness, and sacrifice?
  • How are you encouraged to pursue this kind of life in your own relationships and community?

5. Living Miraculously through the Spirit

  • What are some “miraculous” ways we can live out the gospel in our homes, churches, and communities?
  • Which of these areas do you feel God is calling you to trust Him for because of His Spirit’s empowerment?
  • How does knowing that Jesus’ greatest miracle was His self-sacrifice challenge or motivate you?
  • What specific step can you take this week to live more abundantly in the Spirit’s power?

6. Resting in God’s Power, Not Your Own

  • Why is it important to remember that our ability to live for God depends on His power, not our strength?
  • How can regular practices like church attendance, Sabbath, and daily prayer help you rest in God’s grace?
  • In what ways might trying to do more in your own strength hinder your spiritual growth?
  • How can you intentionally rely more on the Spirit rather than your effort?
