Introduction and Purpose

Paul’s Introduction:

  • Read Romans 1:1, 7, 9-10, 14-15. How do these verses compare to introductions in other letters by Paul?
  • How does knowing Paul had not visited the Roman church affect his approach in this letter?
  • Why is it significant that Paul’s purpose in writing is to fulfill his obligation to preach the Gospel?

The Gospel’s Central Theme

Key Message:

  • What does Paul state as the main theme of Romans in 1:16-17, and why is this significant?
  • According to these verses, what are the different things the Gospel accomplishes?

Humanity’s Condition and God’s Faithfulness

The Human Predicament:

  • How does Paul describe humanity’s state in Romans 1:18-3:20?
  • Why does Paul emphasize that both Jews and Gentiles are under sin?
  • How does this create a problem for God regarding His faithfulness to His promises?

Revealing Righteousness:

  • Read Romans 3:21-24. How does the Gospel reveal God’s righteousness and faithfulness?
  • How does one take hold of this salvation?

Faith and Salvation

Abraham’s Example:

  • Read Romans 4:1-3, 9-12, 20-25. How does Paul use Abraham to explain that salvation has always been by faith?
  • How are we and Abraham saved through the same means?

God’s Remarkable Work:

  • Read Romans 5:1-8, 18-21. How does Paul describe God’s work in these verses?
  • How does he show that the predicament of sin has been completely overthrown?
  • How does he highlight God’s love for us?

Living Out Righteousness

Life Under Grace:

  • Read Romans 6:1-4, 15-18. How does Paul show that salvation by faith doesn’t mean we should continue to sin, but live righteously?

Relation to the Law:

  • Read Romans 7:4-6. How does Paul say we now relate to the law because of Jesus Christ?
  • How does he explain that this means we live as we were meant to in the power of the Spirit?

Application and Support

Connection to Romans 8:1:

  • How does all of this relate to Romans 8:1?

Reflecting and Living:

  • How can reflecting on Romans 1-7 help us marvel at and appreciate the Gospel today?
  • What are practical ways to live out faith knowing we are justified and empowered by the Spirit?

Group Support:
