1. Read Romans 8:14-17 out loud together. Have you been trying to memorize any or all of Romans 8? If so, how is it going?       If not, what holds you back? What value do you think there is in memorizing scripture?

2. Romans 8:14 talks about being led by the Spirit. Spend some time talking about the role of the Spirit in the life of the                believer. What are some of the ways that we are impacted by the work of the Holy Spirit?

3. The Spirit is God’s personal presence with us and in us. Why is this so significant in the life of a Christian?

4. Consider the idea that as believers, filled with the Spirit, we have been adopted into God’s family. In what ways does this      mark a significant change, compared to how the family of God operated before Jesus came? (hint: consider the story          of Abraham found in Genesis 15 & 17, and the broader arc of the Israelites told throughout the Old Testament)

5. In what ways is the idea of family a helpful and meaningful concept for us today in understanding God’s family? In what      ways can it be painful or difficult, for others, or for yourself personally?

6. Romans 8 reveals that because we have been adopted into the family of God, we have the right to call God “Father”.            Reflect on this together. How does your idea of the love of a father, or the love of a parent, for their child, help you to              better understand the love of God? In what ways does the imperfections of our human parents make this difficult?

7. Abba is an Aramaic word that Jesus himself used to cry out to God. Why is it significant that Romans says we too can          cry out to God using this word, Abba.

8.  Romans teaches that we are heirs of God, and co-heirs with Christ. This means that as God’s children, we have a rich           inheritance. Reflect together on what our inheritance is, as sons and daughters in the family God (hint: being an heir is        grounded in both present and future – there are both immediate rights, privileges, roles, and responsibilities, as well as        good things promised that must be waited for)

Pray for each other out of the items discussed. Pray that you would each know God’s fatherly love for you, and that you would be drawn deeper into an abiding relationship with the Lord. Pray that you would truly live as sons and daughters of God, being confident in His love for you, and actively participating in His kingdom work. And, pray that you would also live with hopeful anticipation for the promises of God that are yet to be fulfilled.
